The picture below is of my son and I. He is just 2 and a half but already quite a handful. He always keeps us busy. He’s very smart in a way to tell us what he needs. Just in a few years, he’d soon be getting his pocket money, then his own college expenses account. We want him to be smarter than us in money matters.

I grew up in a frugal lifestyle in India, our son is growing up in a relatively well-to-do household in the USA. What I am saying is, compared to where I grew up my son is getting a better lifestyle in terms of spending money on various necessities of his young life.

So it’s more important to not spoil him with things that he doesn’t need. Spoiling him will make him now but in the long run, he might be in trouble.

We all make mistakes in life. And it does seem that the majority of us make the same money mistakes over and over again. Spending excessively or living beyond our means can quite often leave us in trouble with our finances – it can sometimes come from a wish to impress or just pure carelessness.

The Common Financial Mistakes We Make

Trivial purchases such as daily takeaway coffees, gym memberships we never use, or a magazine you barely read but have been too lazy to cancel the subscription to – it may all seem like nothing at the time, but adding it all up, in the long run, will make a huge difference.

Let me start with a question, out of many things that you plan on doing this year, is there any personal finance related task in there? if not you’ll do a ton of good by adding some simple tasks like reviewing your insurance coverage, putting your valuables in bank locker or paying off that credit card debt.

Do it now

For me this is the year to increase contribution to our retirement fund. We may buy our first home this year, so if that happens there are plenty of financial things to take care of. At this time our financial house is in order. Although I always feel that we should reduce some expenditure and stop buying more and more thing.

Why do We Need Health Insurance

As I stated earlier, Insurance is defense, whereas investing is offense, in the game of life. Fundamentally, we buy health insurance in the same way as we purchase a car or home insurance. We buy health insurance mainly because it is meant to secure ourselves from financial woes in case we get sick or experience some unexpected accidents in the future.

Health Insurance

However, this is a very narrow perspective of getting health insurance; if you would think deeper, by getting this type of insurance, you’re able to properly handle the persistent physical condition and you stay vigorous which only means to say that you’re able to prevent this certain condition from getting worse.

Business consultants love talking about the value triangle. It goes something like this: when businesses procure a product or service, they want it to be high quality, they want it to be fast and they want it to be cheap. MBA lecturers typically put these three parameters at the three points of a triangle and say that a supplier can position itself such that is delivers two, but it will be at the expense of the third. Intuitively, it makes sense:

  • Cheap and fast means poor quality
  • Cheap and good means you have to wait
  • Fast and goodwill are not cheap

The value triangle can be used in other areas of business too, however, such as project management, buildings and infrastructure, and even staffing strategy.

Comprehensive car insurance is the best type of insurance for your vehicle. This type of policy will cover all kinds of damage. This means that the company will grant coverage for damage caused by the driver, as well as coverage for third-party liability.

Get the Best Comprehensive Car Insurance

We came to the USA in 2005 and within 1 month from getting our first car, we were hit by hurricane Wilma. The windshield got shattered. Thankfully I had the comprehensive coverage. An ‘Act of God’ was covered under this type of insurance coverage. Since then I am carrying this clause although I never had to use it again.

My neighbor Tom has the biggest heart… and the biggest house, the biggest truck, the most outdoor furniture one backyard can hold, and three garages stockpiled with stuff. He’s our neighbor who loves to host every neighborhood party featuring everything you could wish to eat or drink. He seems to have all the advice on the best vacation destinations. And, he is the first one to give anything away upon casually overhearing that someone is in need.

How Growing Up Poor Impacts Future Spending Habits

Although my husband and I do our best to be polite and gracious of his friendship and goodwill, we often wonder at what cost Tom does all of this, both financially and personally. Tom and his wife do well for themselves, this much I know.
