This is a guest post from blogger Amy Davis from Slay Your Budget. She is a former therapist, stay-at-home mom of 4 and die-hard University of Pittsburgh Panthers fan. She made financial freedom a priority after their third daughter who required a 53 day NICU stay, 14 surgeries to date, and of course, large medical bills. Hope you enjoy her personal story and her values about her worth in terms of time.

In my former work life, I was a therapist treating children and teens with various mental health challenges. After an evaluation with the psychologist deemed these kids in need of treatment, they were paired with a therapist like myself, to formulate a treatment plan and commence therapy.

Like most people, I read a lot of books about money but never actually do anything afterward. That’s about to change. One of my new objectives is to read books about money and put them into action.

Trying to become a ‘Rich Dad’

I currently rate Rich Dad Poor Dad as my number one personal finance book (there is a reason it is the top-selling personal finance book). Given that I rate it so highly, it feels right that this is the first book that I try and put into action.

2 Things You Need to Know to be Rich

On the internet, you’ll find thousands of articles giving financial advice like investing at an early age, cutting expenses, excelling academically, and so on. The answer lies not in how early you start investing money. Imagine this scenario: you’ve been stuck in a job you hate for nearly a decade. It doesn’t pay a lot, just enough for you to keep on top of your bills and put some money away. Perhaps you’re paying down debt or maybe want to put a down payment on a house.

How to Keep Motivation When Income Goes Down

And then a dream job opportunity comes up. It’s a job in a great company with a lot of opportunity for career progression, but the hours are more suited to you and allow you to pursue your other passions. Maybe you have a blog or a side hustle that you could really do with spending more time on.

We live in a condo association, mostly occupied by immigrant workers or retirees. The town we live in has one of the highest per-capita income in the country. Even a two bedroom condo costs around $150,000. We are renting here but, mostly the families own their condos. We have neighbors sporting Audi, Mercedes, and BMWs. Whenever we go for a walk inside the complex we feel that everyone is probably richer than us.

Neighborhood

Do you always look at your neighbor and wonder why he always drives the latest and best model cars? He also has a lot of time and money to spend in holidays abroad every summer. Recently, you also noted that his child also goes to one of the best schools.

The first step in becoming reach is to understand why you need money. If you have no clear aims, it will not work. Try to make a list of your dreams.
