The Year in Travel 2013

This post is inspired by JD Roth’s post, who indirectly (and unknowingly) inspired me to start this blog. Even the name of this blog was inspired by JD’s earlier blog “Get Rich Slowly”. Coming to the point,since we love to travel, I thought ending the year with a note on our travel performance would be a good move. And doing so, I can be somewhat more personal to you. In summary, 2013 was a good year for us with respect to travelling. We went to as many as 5 places in last 12 months!

I get 28 days of paid leave in a year, so managing 5 destinations to travel to is not a bad performance, right? Usually we travel to our home country, India, every two years, and when we take an India trip, most of those 28 days are used up. We are planning our next India trip in Oct-Nov 2014 so, 2014 is unlikely to be a good year for travel.

This is second post this month about gardening in the patio. earlier I wrote about winter care for potted plants. In this article I’ll tell you how to start a patio garden with minimal cost. We didn’t spend more than $10 when we started living in this country.

Are you currently without a yard? Maybe you live in New York City and you’re lucky enough to have a patio. Or, for the rest of us, perhaps we do have a yard, but don’t want to take the time to develop a large garden. Then a patio garden might be perfect for all of us! In this post I’ll talk about few of the methods you can try to safeguard your plants. Thus helping you to avid the cost of replanting, re seeding or buying a brand new plant.

We live in an apartment, we have two patios to place our pots. At any point of time we have more than 10 pots with flowering or fruiting plants. Even during winter as winter in south Florida is like fall months in rest of the country. For us container gardening is a year round pleasure.

What Type of Investor I am?

Over the weekend I have been pondering over investment. We haven’t invested in a new account since opening and funding our first peer-to-peer lending account with Prosper. Ever since I bought a certified preowned BMW, three weeks back, I was having it in my mind constantly; What if I invested the money instead? How much money had I lost actually,as it was not only that I had to get away with $25,000 cash, but I lost potential income on the money.

OK, no more ranting about the car, although it was not a brand new car. Let’s focus on the investment aspect of my finance now. I have taken a few quizzes on the net, to determine the type of investor I am. The purpose was to gauge self progress and to check whether I am the type of investor I wanted to be at this age. Those survey’s all unite to declare me a risk tolerating investor, which I would have told about myself without taking those quizzes anyway.

I have written most of my posts on saving money. Largest being a compilation of 101 ways to save money. But that was a list of too many things. Here I’d tell you about some of the strategies that we follow. Off course the biggest of all is to extend no-spend days for weeks. But, that’s not always possible. We have one big advantage of growing in a developing country, many things that seem natural to a native American are luxury to us and we don’t usually spend money on them. Having lunch outside is one of those.

SMB, my wife, and I are fairly frugal. I am a bit more and she is less. We take the developing world approach to spending where we try and classify our needs and wishes. That’s why a Correl dinnerware set took 7 years to finally arrive at our home. It was our saving-first nature that allowed us to use one car, that too a pre-owned 2002 Hyundai Elantra.

One Plant at a Time – Our Patio Garden and Square Foot Garden Update

It’s almost summer over here in south Florida, I can’t believe days are so hot already. Just a couple of weeks back, I had to wear a sweater while coming back from a late night party. Nonetheless, our garden is enjoying the weather. The seeds I sowed early March was not growing much beyond tiny seedlings till beginning of April. Now they are growing thick and fast

We are growing Basil, Cilantro, Eggplants, Tomatoes, Peppers and Lettuce this season. Since we are renting a second floor condo it’s a tough job to grow so many vegetables in a limited 7′ X 12′ space. I have grown vegetables and flowers in our patio since last few years. But, not so many in a single season. It’s kind of self test of my skills in gardening you can say.

Few days back I read a comment that even Abraham Lincoln would have lost the race for presidency, had he run for it now. Because, he is not that photogenic. Today’s presidents have to look good. Its arguable if really this is the case but, point me to a CEO or a top executive who looks ugly in any of the top-tier organization. Can we guess that looking good can influence others opinion about you? Let’s explore this subject more.

So, today’s question is, do we need to sport a good look to go up? And. we are only talking about men here. In certain profession, yes you do, like acting, receptionist, public relations officer, etc. Off course for a telephone operator or a back office clerk look doesn’t matter. But, if the same not-so-good-looking person wants to go up the ladder, the look starts to matter. You may think I am opinionated, off-course I am. This why I created this blog, to share my opinion and thoughts.

How Online Coupons Increased our Spending

Not long ago I was bragging about the newest online coupon app, Coupon Sherpa. I never clip coupons but lately I started using coupon Sherpa a lot. But there has been problem since then.

I think my problem at the grocery store is that I walk down every aisle and look at all the deals. I don’t get them all, but I do get some things that are not on my list.

Readers thanks for sticking around to read another chit-chat. I have no idea how many of you really follow this weekend series. I see around 200 page views on average for my chit-chat posts. I believe that’s the number of my dedicated readers.

A sincere thank to all of you, hope you’d do some great stuff on mother’s day. I called my mom and said thanks, I didn’t tell her about dedicating a post for her. Actually she doesn’t know that I write something that others read. She’d have fainted hearing this.

I exhibited poor linguistic skills at school. I know I haven’t improved much still, I am a lot better than I was a year before when I started this blog. So I am really excited to have you as a reader who keep on coming back.
