There are a lot of career paths out there; however, one of the most rewarding is that of an accountant. For those who are interested in how to become an accountant, there are a number of steps that need to be completed.

Becoming an accountant is a career path that requires commitment, dedication, and advanced education. There are a few key points that everyone should note when it comes to earning an accounting degree.

The Steps To Become an Accountant

Earn the Correct Degree

As a general rule, the vast majority of accountants will attend a four-year school and earn a bachelor’s degree; however, this degree is the absolute minimum that is required for someone to become an accountant.

Some fields require advanced coursework that covers a number of other areas. This includes taxes, financial reporting, auditing, and a number of other fields. In general, a total of 150 hours is the minimum amount of coursework needed to consider becoming a CPA.

Many people who desire to earn this certification go on to earn a master’s degree and complete other areas of secondary education. This will strengthen someone’s credentials on their journey to become an accountant.

Decide on a Specialty

Like medical professionals, many accountants will decide to specialize in a certain field as well. For example, some accountants like to start their own firm and do people’s income taxes.

Other people might decide to get a job with a corporation or a healthcare system. Even nonprofit organizations require an accountant to help them complete their taxes.

Other accountants might decide to work for the revenue service. Sometimes, the degree earned by an accountant will impact their ultimate career path.

Therefore, anyone who is interested in the career path of an accountant should take the time to look at the various options ahead of time. This will help them tailor their coursework to meet their chosen career path.

Decide on a CPA

There is a difference between a general accountant and someone who has a CPA certification. A general accountant is someone who is hired to work in the accounting department in a business or company; however, they do not have the advanced credentials to become a CPA.

An accountant is able to perform limited tasks, such as reviewing financial statements; however, they have not passed the test furnished by the IRS or received a formal ID number. A CPA is required to conduct audits.

In order to become a CPA, there are a number of requirements that need to be passed, including working a set number of hours under the guidance of a CPA with an active license.

Become an Accountant

This is a brief overview of what is required to become an accountant. This is a reward career path in which trained professionals help others navigate the complicated issues related to taxes.

Even though this is a challenging path, it is one that is worth it in the end. Anyone who is good with numbers and likes to focus on details should consider accounting.
